OLDE ASIA
Today, Go is considered the oldest continuously played game in the world. Although other games may be as old, only Go has the oldest recorded set of rules. The game has roots in China and arrived in Japan around 800 AD. It has often been a part of military training in East Asia. It is known as Wei-chi in China and Padauk in Korea.
Standard boards have 19 x 19 lines and larger sized squares. Boards of only 13 x 13 lines are great for beginners, for short games, or for studying advanced strategies and traps. They usually have the larger sized squares.
Smaller boards with smaller sized squares and smaller stones (often plastic) are usually easier to carry and store, less expensive, and a good way to try the game without a huge investment.

We are pleased to have found a provider of Go supplies, including professional grade boards and stones. Our previous supplier
had been rather unpredictable during the past few years, so we had removed boards and stones. We are so happy to have supplies again!
Katsura Wood is a possible Endangered Species in some Asian countries. Needless to say, this makes getting Katsura boards difficult.
Caring for your board: wipe it off with a soft cloth. Avoid liquids, cleaners, or wood polishers which may harm the surface. Use a lightly damp cloth for more thorough cleaning. Go board oils are available but are not necessary.

![]() Most shin-kaya (Japanese for ''alternative kaya'') boards from Japan or Korea are made of spruce wood from Alaska or Siberia. These shin-kaya Go boards are made of Tibet spruce wood from Yunnan Province in southern China. This type of wood is called picea asperata in Latin and is sometimes called ''dragon spruce'' or ''Tibet Spruce'', and is denser and harder than northern spruce because it is grown in a tropical environment. |
