GO = WEI CHI = PADAUK

Today, Go is considered the oldest continuously played game in the world. Although other games may be as old, only Go has the oldest recorded set of rules. The game has roots in China and arrived in Japan around 800 AD. It has often been a part of military training in East Asia. It is known as Wei-chi in China and Padauk in Korea.

Warning: Some of these games contain small pieces which can be hazardous for small children.

Standard boards have 19 x 19 lines and larger sized squares. Boards of only 13 x 13 lines are great for beginners, for short games, or for studying advanced strategies and traps. They usually have the larger sized squares.
Smaller boards with smaller sized squares and smaller stones (often plastic) are usually easier to carry and store, less expensive, and a good way to try the game without a huge investment.

    INTRODUCTORY & TRAVEL GO SETS

These are complete sets with board and stones. They are good for people exploring the game of Go without the investment in money and space needed for better, more professional equipment. For players wondering what Go is like, these sets can provide games in living rooms and at kitchen tables, in coffee shops and pubs, airport terminals, universities, school lunch rooms, and work break rooms.

    BOARDS

  • Katsura Wood is a possible Endangered Species in some Asian countries. Needless to say, this makes getting Katsura boards difficult.
  • Caring for your board: wipe it off with a soft cloth. Avoid liquids, cleaners, or wood polishers which may harm the surface. Use a lightly damp cloth for more thorough cleaning. Go board oils are available but are not necessary.

    STONES & BOWLS

  • The round playing pieces of go are called stones and are typically 181 black and 180 white. Extras are often included in case of breakage or miscounts.
  • Sizes - In the listings below, the mm sizes refer to thicknesses of the stones. Chinese stones generally curve upward on the top and are flat on the bottom (like pancakes). Japanese or Korean stones are curved outwards on both sides (like m&m candies). The diameter of these professional go stones are made for larger squares (they are too big for the smaller-squared, introductory boards).
  • Ceramic Go Stones - Most Go players use glass or ceramic stones instead of the more expensive shell or stone.
  • YUNZI GO STONES have a matte finish that has a more natural aesthetic appeal in contrast to more glossy glass stones and they will look nice over time as they absorb moisture and natural oils (but not dirt) from your fingertips. These ceramic go stones are beautiful to look at, feel heavy, and produce excellent 'snap' qualities when placed on the board. The white yunzi stones have a milky eggshell luster to them. A black yunzi stone when held up to the light will have a greenish halo around the edge. Yunzi stones have been made for almost a thousand years (Tang Dynasty) in the same area of Yunnan Province in southern China. The secret recipe for making them is closely guarded, and nobody outside of Yunnan knows for sure what they are made of - although rumor has it that the ingredients include Yunnan mountain agate.
