    TRADITONAL EUROPEAN GAMES

    Picture of ProductDescription & Ordering
BACK TO OLDE EUROPE: Viking Chess - First we should clarify this is NOT a chess variant. This game is about attack and defense between two unequal sides. A king begins the game placed in the center of the board surrounded by 8 of his guard. 16 attackers sit along the four sides. All pieces play like rooks from chess, going along the horizontal and vertical rows (no diagonals). Throughout northern Europe there are variations of this game, such as Hnafeltafl, Fichneal, and sometimes the game Tablut. According to one history, the Vikings discovered a Persian game that when combined with this one became chess. 2 players.

Early games of Morris in Europe were played with only 9 pieces each. 2 players. 5" square, dark wooden board with gold lines and marbles.
