    INTRODUCTORY & TRAVEL GO SETS

These are good introductory sets for people exploring the game of Go or as travel sets for a more experienced player. These allow people to play go the without an investment in money and space needed for better, more professional equipment. These sets can provide games in living rooms and at kitchen tables, in break rooms at work, in coffee shops and pubs, in airport terminals, and more. These are complete sets, each with a board and stones.

Standard go boards have 19 x 19 lines and larger sized squares. Boards of only 13 x 13 lines are great for beginners, for short games, or for studying advanced strategies and traps. They usually have the larger sized squares.
Smaller boards with smaller sized squares and smaller stones (often plastic) are usually easier to carry and store, less expensive, and a good way to try the game without a huge investment.

Katsura Wood is a possible Endangered Species in some Asian countries. Needless to say, this makes getting Katsura boards difficult. Caring for your board: wipe it off with a soft cloth. Avoid liquids, cleaners, or wood polishers which may harm the surface. Use a lightly damp cloth for more thorough cleaning. Go board oils are available but are not necessary.

OLDE ASIA: Beveled Wooden Go, Nonfolding - Light weight for easy carrying, single piece wooden board with smaller than standard-sized squares. Comes with small glass stones. 19x19 lined board is 13 1/2" x 13 1/2" with beveled edges and felted bottom, little less than 3/4" thick. Good for displaying on bookshelves and small tables.

    GO STONES

The round playing pieces of go are called stones and are typically 181 black and 180 white. Extras are often included in case of breakage or miscounts.
  • Chinese stones generally curve upward on the top and are flat on the bottom (like pancakes).
  • Japanese and Korean stones are curved outwards on both sides (like m&m candies). The diameter of professional go stones are made for larger squares (they are too big for the smaller-squared, introductory boards).
  • Ceramic Go Stones - Most experienced go players use glass or ceramic stones instead of the more expensive shell and stone.

    MAH JONG (AMERICAN STYLE)

    Back to top of page.

A game of 19th Century Chinese origins, Mah Jong is a tile game played similar to the western card game of Rummy. Players collect tiles to make runs of three (such as 4, 5, 6) or sets of three (such as 8, 8, 8). 4 players are required.

  • The main difference between American and Chinese sets is that American sets have jokers as wild cards plus a few extra "suit" tiles. You can play Asian style Mah Jong with an American set by removing the extra pieces.
  • American Mah Jong requires the use of annual cards which indicate combinations you are required to match for points.

OLDE ASIA: Mongolian Knucklebone Divination - Early dice were often made from sheep's knuckles and were called bones. Numbers were assigned to the four long sides, each side with a different shape. The meanings of how the knucklebones landed after being tossed were orally passed from person to person. When one of our customers recently traveled to Mongolia, he found the meanings written down for tourists. He bought us a guide sheet for Mongolian divination and some real knucklebones.
