    TRADITIONAL GAMES OF EAST ASIA
GAME OF GO, WEI CHI, or BADUAK

    Top

Go is the Asian strategy game of black and white stones. Easy to learn, lifetime to master. Standard go boards have 19 x 19 lines and larger sized squares. Boards of only 13 x 13 lines are great for beginners, for short games, or for studying advanced strategies and traps. Either of these boards usually have larger sized squares.
Smaller boards with smaller sized squares and smaller stones (often plastic) are usually easier to carry and store, less expensive, and a good way to try the game without a huge investment.

    GO STONES

The round playing pieces of go are called stones and are typically 181 black and 180 white. Extras are often included in case of breakage or miscounts.
Chinese Stones generally curve upward on the top and are flat on the bottom. These are called single convex (like pancakes).
Japanese and Korean Stones curve outwards on both sides. These are called double convex (like m&m candies).
The diameter of professional go stones are made for larger squares (they are too big for the smaller-squared, introductory boards).
Ceramic Go Stones - Most experienced go players use glass or ceramic stones instead of the more expensive shell and stone.
Plastic Go Stones - 6mm high x 20mm diameter, double convex (like m&m candies), plastic stones in plastic bags. Made in China.

    TRADITIONAL GAMES OF EAST ASIA
    MAH JONG (AMERICAN STYLE)

    Top

Mah Jong is game of 19th Century Chinese origins. Although it is popular in many Jewish communities, that is Chinese calligraphy and NOT Hebrew written on the tiles, as one young Jewish woman insisted (I'm not making this up!).
It is a tile game played similar to the western card game of Rummy. Players collect tiles to make runs of three (such as 4, 5, 6) or sets of three of the same (such as 8, 8, 8). 4 players are recommended, but you can limp with 3.

  • The main difference between American and Chinese sets is that American sets have jokers as wild cards plus a few extra "suit" tiles (making 166 tiles). You can play Asian style Mah Jong with an American set by removing the extra pieces.
  • American Mah Jong usually requires the use of annual cards which indicate combinations you are required to match for points. There are cards for various factions, with National Mah Jong probably being the most well-known and popular. American Mah Jong is a nice alternative to National. I've even heard there is a card for Air Force Mah Jong. But note, although many Americans rely on some form of annual card, it is possible to play mah jong without an annual card.

. MAH JONG BASICS - To play the game, your primary need is tiles. Once you have tiles, you can play mah jong! It's like having a deck of cards; everything else just makes playing and storing the game easier.

Or maybe you have a white set and are ready for something different!

    .

JUST TILES- Basic White - Here are standard American mah jong tiles (166 tiles) in white resin. Although the green ink looks blackish and may make comparing the tiles a little more difficult, since you look at the suits the lack of a vibrant green color shouldn't really matter in the actual playing of the game. Tile size: 1 3/16" x 15/16" x 1/2"

    b) $60 b) pink aluminum
    c) $60 c) black aluminum

    .
Mah Jong Plastic Racks - 4 plastic racks for holding the mah jong tiles during a game: blue, green, yellow, red. Most tiles are thick enough to stand on their own, but usually players use a rack to hold the tiles. 18-3/4" long including the metal posts, 16" long rack without the posts.

Nowadays the 4 metal posts are used for hooking a plastic pushing arm to the tile rack. Originally they were for holding Chinese money as players gambled.

Annual Card 2010, National, Large Print - This is an essential if you play in large groups of Americans. When one of our customers recently traveled to Mongolia, he found the meanings written down for tourists. He bought us a guide sheet for Mongolian divination and some real knucklebones.
