They have survived the onslaught of time and computer-driven diversions. They are still with us and are being manufactured in today's market. Come, return to simpler distractions.

For classic card games that use the traditional suits of hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs, such as Cribbage, Bridge, Poker, and Authors, please see our Traditional Card section.
For nostalgic board games and card games that use specialized cards, please look at our various sub-sections of Board and Card Games pages.
Warning: Some of these games contain small parts that can be choking hazards to children 12 years of age or younger.

. EARLY JACKS Played the world over for millenia, early Jacks was a game usually played with "knucklebones" or pebbles. Throughout the world and before the invention of tiny rubber balls and manufactured metal or plastic star-like pieces, a special game piece or small wooden ball was thrown up and while it was in the air, game pieces on the ground were gathered up in various combinations. Today, a rubber ball is often bounced and pieces scooped up before it bounces a second time.

Find replica knucklebones on our Bone Dice page.

NOTE: Not only are knucklebones the ancestors of jacks, but they are also the ancestors of dice!

NORTH AMERICAN TIDDLYWINKS ASSOCIATION - The aim of the adult game is to land winks in a pot. If the winks are outside the pot, then the best thing is to cover another person's winks while having yours left uncovered on the mat.
Serious adult competitions began in Britain. Now there are regular tournaments and even a world title. The first trans-Atlantic contact between Britain and the USA was in 1972 when a team from MIT toured the UK. A challenge system now exists between the English Tiddlywink Assoc and the corresponding North American Tiddlywink Assoc. For more information, please go to http://www.tiddlywinks.org/.

EARLY PICK UP STICKS- ASIA TO HUNGARY (MIKADO) In 5th century BC India, Buddha gave a list of games he would not play. In that list was a game whose object was to remove one piece of crockery from a pile without wobbling other pieces. In 12th-century China, pick up sticks were intricately carved from ivory, bone, or wood and point values were determined by the type of figure a stick had carved into it. One stick was called the "emperor stick." The sticks were used for divination or gambling. In the 16th century, the oracle practice travelled to Japan where the Emperor was referred to as "Mikado" and the sticks became known as Mikado sticks. Mikado sticks typically have bands of color. The Japanese Mikado version of pick-up sticks was brought to the United States in 1936 from Hungary.

EARLY PICK UP STICKS- ASIA TO BRITAIN (SPELLICANS) The British discovered pick up sticks while in China and the game became popular in Britain as Spellicans. The British carried the game to North America long before the 20th century Hungarian version.

EARLY PICK UP STICKS- NATIVE AMERICA (JACKSTRAWS) The Native Americans played a similar game with colored, painted, or dotted straws of wheat or reeds. The Indians taught their straw game to early colonists and Jackstraws became a popular parlor game for young people during the Colonial and Victorian eras

EARLY BINGO/BEANO An early version of Bingo was played in Italy as early as 1530. By the 18th century, the French had added playing cards and tokens. In 1929, Edwin Lowe watched a game of Beano being played with dried beans in Atlanta. Afterwards, he introduced the game to friends in New York. According to legend, one of his players became so excited to win that he yelled "Bingo" instead of "Beano." By the 1940s, Lowe's Bingo games were all over the country. Through the centuries, Bingo has been used to educate children about math, spelling, animals, and history. It is also a popular fund raiser for churches and other groups.
