WOODEN CLASSIC PIECES: Many players who say they want a Staunton set are refering to the more classic chess styles, not necessarily to the expensive sets made by the House of Staunton in England.

KNIGHTS: Most people look first at the knight.
TOURNAMENT WORTHY: Any set with a king over 3.5 inches tall, whether plastic or wood, can be used in tournaments.

FIGURATIVE: These pieces often have knights, foot soldiers, and dragons that confuse many chess players. Unless a player has requested figurative pieces, the classic style is usually preferred. We have a few in the store, especially the Alamo Set since we are in Texas!

A WORD ABOUT BOARDS: Most of our pieces come without boards. It really is up to your taste and to the one who will be using the board as to what size the squares should be or what color the board should be.
When choosing a square size, two pawns should easily fit within the diagonal of a chess square.
When choosing a board color, most of our customers prefer to match woods or colors. However, some chess players who play many hours a day like to have contrasting colors to lessen eye strain, thus black pieces on a brown board or brown pieces on a black board.
