Because of variations in wood grain and color and the difficulty in describing weight and carving differences, we sell only a few wood sets on our web site. CHESS BOARDS

Mix and match your boards and pieces. Or buy chess already combined into a set! Algebraic notation along the edges is for communicating the square coordinates, such as c10. This enables players to record moves, read manuals which use them a lot to indicate where pieces move (move queen from c10 to c8), or talk via computer or (gasp!) postal mail. BOARDS: We sell most of our boards separate from the pieces. It really is up to you or the chess player to compare the boardto the pieces.
Square size: two pawns should easily fit within the diagonal of ONE chess square.
Board color: most of our customers prefer to match colors. However, for those who play many hours a day, they prefer contrasting colors to lessen eye strain, thus they might like black pieces on a brown board or brown pieces on a black board.
