Canasta
Canasta - Canasta is one of the better known Rummy games and is played with two decks of cards. Players must make groups (melds) of 7 cards, which can be 3 of one type (rank) and 4 of another. Sequences do not count. 7 of one rank is called a canasta. There are wild cards (w=2s and jokers) to help make the melds, thus a canasta could be 7,7,7,7,7,W,W. There are variations, but the two deck set with point values on the cards that are presented here should be usable with any of them.
| CANASTA CALIENTE has special cards with graphics of Argentine inspiration. The cards play exactly the same way, by exactly the same rules. But some of the Specialty Cards have graphics that make them easier to play. The Caliente version makes it much easier to teach beginners. No need to remember what cards are 50 point wild cards or 20 point wild cards, etc. The graphics tell you! HISTORY BUFFS: Canasta means basket in Spanish and this game is named after the baskets the South Americans used to hold the cards. Canasta is said to have originated in Uruguay in 1939 and then spread to Argentina and the world. It was so popular in the 1950's, that it threatened Contract Bridge as the premier card game. HAND & FOOT is a Canasta variant involving four to six decks rather than two. This canasta variant was created in the 1970s and commercial decks for this started to become available in the late 80s.
